Why we put our bathroom lamps through a “steam torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and constant moisture. It’s basically a recipe for things to break. Most people just want a heater that works when they step out of a cold shower. But for us, just “turning on” isn’t enough. We put every batch of our infrared lamps through damp-heat aging tests. Basically, we simulate years of steamy showers in a matter of days to see what breaks.
The battle between water and quartz
Most of these heaters use shortwave infrared quartz tubes. Quartz is great for heat, but there’s a catch. The spot where the glass meets the metal electrodes? That’s the weak link. If there’s even a microscopic gap in that seal, water vapor sneaks in. The second that moisture touches the tungsten filament, the lamp is toast. Pop. Gone. To stop that from happening in your home, we shove the lamps into high-humidity chambers and crank up the heat. We force the moisture to move faster. If a seal is going to fail, we want it to happen in our lab, not in your ceiling.
Watching the wires
Then there’s the electrical side of things. Moisture loves to cause oxidation on the contacts. When that happens, the electricity has a harder time flowing, which creates resistance. That resistance turns into heat—and not the good kind. We’re talking about the base of the lamp overheating. We keep a close eye on the voltage drop during our tests. If the resistance starts climbing, that lamp is out. No exceptions.
The tricky balancing act
Here’s the weird part: you can’t just make the seal “super tight” to block the water. Quartz and metal don’t expand at the same rate when they get hot. If the seal is too rigid, the glass just snaps under the pressure. It’s a constant tug-of-war between keeping the water out and giving the materials room to breathe. We spend a lot of time finding that sweet spot. It’s the only way to make sure you don’t end up with a dead heater three months into winter. You just want a warm bathroom. We make sure you actually get one.
