
Getting Your Bathroom Heater Wattage Right
If you pick the wrong wattage for your infrared heater, you’re going to end up with one of two problems: you’ll still be shivering in the corners, or you’ll be throwing money away on an electric bill that makes no sense. Here is the secret with infrared: you aren’t actually heating the air in the room. You’re using shortwave radiation to warm up your skin and the surfaces around you. Because of that, the size of your room is the only thing that really matters when picking your power spec.
How much power do you actually need?
It mostly comes down to the footprint of the space. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a single lamp between 400W and 600W usually does the trick. Be careful not to overdo it here. If you put too much power in a small space, you create a “hot zone” that feels oppressive rather than cozy. For those medium-sized bathrooms (4m² to 8m²), you’re looking at 800W to 1200W. My advice? Split that load between two lamps. It spreads the heat out more evenly, and if one bulb happens to burn out, you aren’t left standing in the cold. Once you hit those big master baths over 10m², you’ll need 1500W or more to actually feel the difference.
Steam, splashes, and safety
Since this is a bathroom, moisture is the enemy. You need units with an IP rating—basically a guarantee that they can handle steam and the occasional splash. Look for quartz glass and sealed connectors; that’s what keeps the water away from the filaments so the thing doesn’t short out. But keep this in mind: more wattage means the lamp gets hot—fast. If you cram a 1500W lamp into a tight space or hang it too low, you risk actually burning someone. To keep things safe and let the heat spread naturally, try to mount your heaters at least 2.1 meters up.
Saving a bit of cash
The best way to keep your energy bill down is to hook these up to a timer or a motion sensor. Infrared is great because it hits full temperature almost instantly. There’s no waiting around for the room to “warm up.” If you’re running a 1200W system in a room that only needs 600W, you’re essentially paying to heat the air that your ventilation fan is just sucking right back out. Just match the wattage to your square footage. It’s that simple.
