
Why your old bathroom heat lamps are failing (and what actually works)
Ever notice how those old-school “light-warmth” lamps always seem to burn out right when you need them most? There’s a reason for that. Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the steam from a hot shower and the random splashes, moisture finds its way into everything. Most of those old lamps just aren’t sealed well enough. Water creeps into the electrical terminals, and—pop—you’ve either blown a fuse or fried the internals. That’s why we’re seeing everyone switch over to high-IP rated infrared heaters. They’re basically built like tanks against water. The secret is in the seal. Most basic heaters just use a glass bubble. But in a steamy bathroom, condensation forms on the cold parts of the fixture. If the unit doesn’t have a high IP rating, that water leaks inside and shorts the whole thing out. The high-IP units we use have specialized coatings and gaskets. They keep the electronics bone-dry, no matter how much steam you’re pumping out. And here is the best part: infrared doesn’t bother trying to warm up the air in the room. It sends heat directly to you. Since bathroom vents usually suck the warm air right out of the room, convection heaters are a waste of money. With infrared, you feel the warmth the second you flip the switch. It’s instant. A quick word on power and safety We want these things to heat up fast, but we have to be smart about it. If you cram a super high-wattage unit into a tiny ceiling space, you can actually put too much stress on the waterproof seals. Plus, if the wiring in your walls isn’t up to the task, you risk overheating the conduits. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where you get the heat you want without stressing your home’s electrical system. Keeping them running The good news? These are usually drop-in replacements. You can swap out your old lamps without a total renovation. We use reinforced connectors too, so you don’t have to worry about them rattling loose over time. One tip:don’t go crazy with the harsh chemicals. If you scrub these with aggressive cleaners, you’ll eat away at the waterproof coatings over a few years. Just use a damp cloth. Keep it simple. Do it right, and you can stop the annoying cycle of replacing burnt-out bulbs every couple of seasons.
